The Advantages of a Pellet Grill

Pellet Grills seem to have come out of nowhere to become one of the most popular cooking innovations for the outdoor chef in recent years.

But, in reality, the first pellet grill was invented by Joe Traeger in Oregon in the early 80’s and it proved to be so popular that he patented the idea and brought it to market.

While there is  some tea to spill about how Pellet grills sales expanded we will save that for a different post.

Pellet grills are based on the idea behind pellet heaters, using an electric  motor to feed a consistent and measured amount of compacted wood pellets into a fire. This helps  maintain heat at a consistent level that is hard to achieve using other outdoor cooking methods.

Better temperature control leads to better grilling results while  opening up opportunities for a wider variety of cooking methods, allowing for more variety in the foods that can be prepared on the grill.

Sales of pellet grills have skyrocketed over the last ten years. and competition has  grown but overall The Traeger brand is still the king. We have highlighted some of our favorite Pellet grill models in various prices ranges on this page .

Here is a comparison of how pellet grills compare to other grills:

1. Fuel Source: Pellet grills use compressed wood pellets from hardwood such as hickory, oak, apple, or mesquite instead of charcoal, gas, or electric for  fuel.
2. Versatility: Pellet grills can be used for grilling, smoking, baking, roasting, and even braising. Precise temperature controls and  consistent heat,  allow for a wide variety of cooking styles.
3. Temperature Control: Pellet grills are equipped with digital controllers that allow you to set and monitor the desired temperature. This feature ensures consistent heat distribution, resulting in evenly cooked food throughout the grilling process.
4. Flavor: One of the significant advantages of pellet grills is the rich, smoky flavor they impart to the food. The wood pellets release an aromatic smoke that infuses into the food, enhancing its taste.
5. Convenience: Once you set the desired temperature, the grill’s automatic system takes care of maintaining it throughout the cooking process. Additional features like hopper systems automatically feed wood pellets, eliminating the need for constant fuel monitoring.
